“you were here, all along with us, before us, in us”
- Excerpt from "meet me at the water" by Korean-American poet Kyunghee Kim.
In Flow is a multimedia installation that invites audiences to envision how silenced histories of violence flow through water—carrying blood, ashes, dirt, and scents of gunfire—echoing across borders and time, permeating our bodies and lands.
&#38;nbsp;

The large-scale video projection of flowing water, the fountain installation, and ceramic sculptures that transmit the voice of a massacre survivor, immerse the audience in the unseen and unspoken. The exhibition calls attention to fragmented familial memories of US imperialist violence in South Korea that are submerged and silenced in water.

Here, the audience connects to the persistent currents of historical trauma and violence that circulate across the trans-Pacific. We fumble through illegible traces and whispery voices of the dead and silenced, seeking collective (un)survival, in flow.
혈향이 나는 분수, 생존자의 목소리를 담은 도자기, 피와 재를 머금고 흐르는 강의 영상 등을 통해 제국주의 폭력의 흐름을 탐구하는 몰입형 설치 및 퍼포먼스이다. 역사적 트라우마, 세대 간의 기억, 그리고 환태평양 지역에서의 폭력의 잔재가 시공간을 넘어, 우리의 삶 속으로 스며드는 과정을 시각화하였다.

	Flowing Violence: meet me at the water, 2024-2025
2-channel video in a loop
Created with poet Kyunghee Kim, the video shows a peaceful river carrying faint traces of blood and ashes. As they mingle underwater, voices reveal silenced tragedies in South Korea, inviting viewers to flow with these memories.












한국계 미국인 시인 김경희와의 협업으로 제작된 멀티센서리(multi-sensory) 설치 작업이다. 전 지구적 물의 흐름과 연결되어 시간과 국경을 초월하며 흐르는 폭력을 다룬다. 한국전쟁 학살 희생자들을 태운 재, 한강에 투신하던 친할머니의 피눈물, 그리고 현재 이루어지는 폭력의 현장에서의 모든 잔여물이 흘러 ‘우리’의 몸을 감싸는 순간을 상상하도록 한다.

	Qual Qual 콸콸, 2025mixed mediaThe fountain visually references the Hallasan volcano, which formed Jeju Island, and Jeju massacre survivors' fortresses. Pumping water, scented with blood and gunfire, hints at the persistence of violence, surging into our spaces.











제주 한라산의 ‘폭발’하는 백록담과 제주 4.3 사건 이후 생존자들이 마을을 둘러 쌓았다는 돌담의 이미지를 시각적 레퍼런스로 삼아 제작한 분수 조각이다. 관객으로 하여금 전시 공간으로 끊임없이 솟아나 흐르는 폭력의 잔해를 상상케 한다.

Created with poet Kyunghee Kim and Matt Dhillon, the zine reflects on familial memories and U.S. imperialist violence in South Korea. Printed in 300 copies, echoing No Gun Ri’s deaths, the narratives are distributed to the audience. 












한국계 미국인 시인 김경희와의 협업으로 제작된 8쪽 리플렛으로, 나레이션와 시가 드로잉과 함께 흐르듯 엮어 작성되어 있다. 한국 전쟁 당시, 노근리 지역에서의 학살 추정치인 300명에 맞추어 한정된 부수로 인쇄된 리플렛은 관객에게 전시에 대한 간략한 배경과 폭력의 일부를 전달한다.

	My Grandma’s Suseoks Whisper…, 2025

These sculptures reference Suseoks (viewing stones) my grandmother collected from the seashore where her uncle was executed and lost. Reinterpreted as vessels of memory, they transmit her recollections.











작가 외할머니의 수석(水石) 수집 행위를 역사적 트라우마와 상실에 대처하고 회복하는 수행으로 바라보고, 수석들과, 학살 희생자들의 몸 (갈라진 피부, 물에 빠진 몸, 피 흘리는 입)을 시각적 레퍼런스 삼아 총 3개가 제작되었다. 관객이 다가가면, 제주 4.3을 증언하는 구술 오디오가 흘러나온다.

This site-specific work transforms an ordinary drinking fountain into a meaningful site for reimagining violence that may flow into the gallery space through water and be consumed by the audience.

The 19th Residency Program in 2025 was a focused three-month period during which participating artists continued their practices while engaging with one another through subtle forms of influence and exchange at various points of convergence. The title of this Open Studio, Swing-by, refers to a maneuver in space exploration where a spacecraft adjusts its course and speed by passing near another celestial body. In this context, it serves as a metaphor for how artists, through proximity and mutual observation, gradually adjust their directions in response to the presence and practice of others. 

Nanji Residency has continued to examine the significance of residencies as a site for dialogue and experiment, particularly within the evolving conditions of contemporary artistic practice. This Open Studio marks a moment within that ongoing inquiry. It presents the developments of the 19th group of resident artists and opens the studios to the public, offering a space in which visitors may encounter the processes, questions, and concerns that shape each artist’s work. 

We hope these encounters will connect viewers to the ongoing inquiries that extend beyond the studio and continue to shape each artist’s practice.2025년 19기 레지던시 프로그램은 3개월이라는 밀도 높은 여정을 통해 입주자들이 저마다의 궤도에서 창작을 지속해나가면서도, 서로의 궤적이 교차하는 지점에서 다양한 움직임과 반응을 만들어냈습니다. 이번 오픈스튜디오의 제목 '스윙바이'는 우주 탐사선이 다른 천체의 중력을 활용해 궤도와 속도를 조정하듯, 예술가들이 서로의 작업과 태도에서 미묘한 영향을 주고받으며 새로운 방향을 모색하는 과정을 비유적으로 드러냅니다.난지미술창작스튜디오는 급변하는 환경 속에서 예술가 레지던시의 교류와 실험의 가치를 꾸준히 모색해왔습니다. 이번 오픈스튜디오는 그 과정의 일환으로, 역동적으로 전개된 19기 프로그램의 경과를 공유하고, 창작 현장을 시민들에게 열어 보이는 자리입니다. 스튜디오를 방문하는 관람객들이 입주자들과의 직접적인 만남을 통해 예술가들의 고민과 탐구의 흔적을 마주하고, 다가올 창작의 궤도에 함께 접속해보는 시간이 되기를 바랍니다.

트라이보울 초이스[전시] 시각분야에 선정된 &#38;lt;어긋난 땅에 기대기&#38;gt;는 ‘어긋난 장소(wrong place)’에 놓인 개인의 장소에 관한 상실된 감각을 살피고, 상실로부터 가능한 연결의 가능성을 살피는 노오경과 송석우의 2인전이다. 노오경과 송석우는 사회적 규범과 불화한 몸에 관한 공통된 관심을 렌즈 베이스 시각 언어를 활용해 서로 다른 시각 언어로 풀어낸다. 노오경은 사적인 이야기의 재구성을 통해, 사회적 폭력과 배제를 경험한 이방인 여성의 몸을 퍼포먼스 영상으로 담는다. 송석우는 다양한 크기의 사진 설치를 통해 거시적인 사회적 구조 속 어긋난 몸들에 관해 다룬다. 이들은 서로의 작업을 통해 몸들이 이어지며 새롭게 복구하는 장소감의 정체를 탐색한다.


A two-person exhibition, Leaning Against the Wrong Place, explores the sense of non-belonging and the hope for connection experienced by individuals in a 'wrong place.' Artists Okyoung Noh and Seokwoo Song map their shared interest in bodies that conflict with socio-cultural norms through various lens-based images.
Noh presents performance videos featuring the bodies of female migrants who experience gendered and racialized violence in South Korea and the United States. Song presents a series of photographs in various sizes, depicting disoriented bodies within larger systems. Through each other’s work, Noh and Song explore the sense of a 'right place' that can be recovered through connected bodies.

In her exhibition, I Take Care of You and Survive, ASYS Resident, Okyoung Noh explores how workers of color maintain, repair, or support other bodies within their communities.&#38;nbsp; She invites audiences to consider, how do we reciprocally survive by exchanging physically intimate, transformative, yet demanding care offered by laborers of Asian descent? How can we access and honor the narratives of migrant workers, who are so often silenced, overlooked, stigmatized, or even exploited under socio-cultural, racial, and gendered hierarchies? The exhibition I Take Care of You and Survive will transform Wave Pool’s gallery into a participatory stage and a mock massage parlor, adorned with LED signs, vibrant curtains, and colorful lighting. These elements borrow from the aesthetics of the shops and businesses that serve as inspiration for this project. The installation is designed to lead audiences to enter a closed space and witness the stories of Asian caregiving workers. These stories are collected through interviews with massage therapists, nail artists, and hairdressers of Asian descent working in Greater Cincinnati and Noh’s current residence of Washtenaw County, Michigan.
Noh’s show both gathers and honors the omitted narratives of Asian labor, which vividly haunt those spaces. The artist’s collected stories of attentiveness and consideration are unfolded throughout the exhibition, with respect and care for those doing this work.

	Video: I Take Care of You and (We) Survive︎︎︎
The performance video was installed at the center of the gallery space, beneath the massage table. The video consists of a performance featuring me and a performer, Ana Hart, as well as a documentary video of the hands and interviews of Asian workers.

	Installation: Cared-Labored Bodies︎︎︎,&#38;nbsp; Caring-Laboring Bodies︎︎︎Five unpainted pieces of bisqueware created using techniques the artist learned from the interviewees, along with five rolling stools of letter-pressed veg-tan leather covers, were installed.

Artist Okyoung Noh and Chien-An Yuan will discuss Noh's video exhibit, What Are Your Names, Asia(n)?, currently on display on the lobby gallery screen. A screening of the piece will be followed by a discussion and question and answer session.

Screenings of What Are Your Names, Asia(n)? on AADL's lobby gallery screen will be held on Sunday December 3rd 1:30-2:00pm, Monday, December 4th, 6:00-6:30pm in the lobby of the Downtown Library and Tuesday December 5th, 6:30-7:00pm.

This performance “aZn luv luv t0ur” invites audiences to join Noh and Yoo as tour guides in leading an interactive tour engaging with Western online archives fetishizing the Asian female body. The tour physically maps some of the contemporary digital spaces of racism, sexism, and imperialism that amplify perspectives of sensationalizing and exotification of the Eastern Asian woman such as sub-Reddit communities, porn culture, mail-order brides, and/or memes. In tandem, the performance also maps the psychological consequences in Yoo and Noh’s lived experiences, in relation to the representation and reproduction of sexual fantasy of “fetishized, sexualized and marginalized Asian women.”

여성의 신체를 패티쉬화하는 온라인
커뮤니티, 밈, 포르노,데이팅 사이트, 백인
남성과 얽힌 개인사 등을 소재로 5가지
시퀀스를 구성하고, 각 장면에서 20여명
관객의 참여를 유도한다.



관객은 각 씬에서 방관자, 가담자, 소비자, 댄서 등을
선택적으로 퍼포밍하게 된다. 이
과정에서 온라인 매테리얼은 지금 여기 존재하는 몸들의 서사에 편입되고, 아시아
여성의 신체와 관객과의 경계가 흐려진다.

The exhibition, Can You Welcome Me, presents Okyoung Noh’s multimedia installation consisting of the performance video and flag, My American-ish Flag (2023), and the new drawing piece, I Practice America (2023).Noh’s exhibition explores the meaning of foreigners’ effortful residence and unfeasible citizenship in the United States. In the visualization of this theme, Noh plays with the symbolic meanings of a national flag — loyal citizenship and/or neo-nationalist nativism — as well as cursive — the old-school English proficiency. The video shows a Korean woman holding the fake star-spangled banner — an effortful drawing of Stars and Stripes on the boldly printed Korean flag — and interacting with the artist’s neighboring White suburb landscape where “real American flags” are raised. Here, Noh’s labored and crafted American-ish flag fails to cover her original nationality and vulnerability. The text-based drawing, I Practice America (2023), shows Noh’s unsuccessful writing practice of the cursive “America” — which was a symbol of “real” American writing for the artist.

 

전시 “캔 유 웰컴 미 (Can You Welcome Me)”는 작가 노오경의 퍼포먼스 비디오와 국기 설치물 “나의 아메리카-스런 태극기” (2023) 와 신작 “아메리카 연습하기” (2023)을 선보인다.“아메리카 연습하기” (2023)는 단어 “아메리카(America)”를 고풍스러운 영문 필기체로 적기 위해 반복해서 적어 내린 드로잉이다. 작가의 어색한 이텔릭 영문 필기체 연습은 미국에서 이방인이 성취 불가능한 수월성과 그로 인해 불가능한 “아메리카” 쓰기-되기를 증언한다.“나의 아메리카-스런 태극기” (2023)는 국경을 넘어 이동하는 몸과 국가 정체성에 대해 질문한다. 석사 학위를 위해 미국에 온 이후, 작가는 어디에서든 쉽게 미국 국기를 보았다. 공휴일도 아닌데 성조기를 게양한 여러 장소에서 작가는 펜데믹을 기점으로 급부상한 배타적인 네오내셔널리즘(neo-nationalism)의 위협을 느꼈다. 애국심의 자랑스러운 게양 옆, 이동하는 타자의 몸은 어떤 국기를 들 수 있는가? 새로운 땅에서 배제되고 싶지 않은 이방인은 미국의 국기를 드는 것을 택한다. 그러나 그것은 미국의 자랑스러운 소비자-시민을 위해 생산된 공산품이 아닌, 어설프고 성실하게 그려진 성조기이다. 이미 프린트되어 있는 태극기를 제대로 가리지도 못하는, 공들여 성조기를 흉내 낸 태극기이다.

Sponsored by Samchully Group and based in South Korea, this scholarship award is designed to find and support prospective Korean artists of talent in the field of visual arts. The total amount of the scholarship that is given to winners is approximately $82,000. This year, thirty students were selected as finalists through portfolio and statement reviews, exhibition presentations, and two interviews with international juries, including Whitney Museum curator Kelly Long and former MoMA curator Laura Braverman. Work by Chunman Art Award winners will be presented in the award exhibition in Seoul, South Korea in May 2023.
