Building Better-Life Cairns with Our Great Hope(2021) is a series of two workshops where I worked with two facilitators for six urban residents. We talked about and linked each person's value with the objects brought from the participants’ living spaces.
Participants stacked their objects into the form of cairns, stacked high or low and stably or unsteadily, depending on how one willed it or feared it.At the end of the workshops, we performed Tabdori, an old ceremony to fire up hope for a better life in Korea by walking around the cairns.
I intended to recontextualize our very common activities that helped people pursue a better life in the context of unusual activities in which participants were posed questions about one’s value and to stack their objects in a creative manner.
한국에는 소원을 비는 행동으로 ‘돌 쌓기(공든 탑 만들기)’를 합니다. 돌 쌓기는 정확한 기원을 알 수 없으나 우리나라뿐만 아니라 티베트, 몽골 등지에도 발견되는 현상이라고 합니다. 소원을 비는 정성, 그리고 무언가에 ‘공을 들이는’ 방식으로 하나의 돌에 하나의 염원을 불어넣으며, 어디서 연유했는지 모를 소망찬 의식(儀式)으로 우리는 쌓아 올리고, 이것이 흔들리지 않고, 무너지지 않기를 빌게 됩니다. 하나씩 쌓여 아슬아슬한 형상을 이룬 작은 ‘공든 탑’은 우리가 염원하는 유토피아를 일시적으로 현시합니다.
우리는 이것을 소위 ‘공든 탑’이라 부르지만, 어쩌면 이것은 무작위적으로 존재하는 오브제들을 긁어 모아 이들의 ‘자연스러움’을 거스른 일시적 재배치이자 ‘버티기’ 그 자체입니다. 비자연적 상태의 ‘공든 배치’가 유지되는 순간만큼은 우리가 이상향적으로 갈구하는 세계를 바라고, 상상하고, 기원할 수 있는 장이 펼쳐집니다.
어쩌면 관악구 속 우리의 생활도 우리의 소망이 투영된 일시적이고, 비자연적인 ‘공든 배치’, 즉 우리가 간절히 쌓아 올린 일종의 ‘공든 탑’이 아닌지 워크샵을 통해 묻고자 합니다. (노오경, 배러라이프 협회장)

Continuing participants’ “stories” in their daily lives
After all, I sent the package of their objects and customized novels which were written by Hye-rin Kim(김혜린 작가)and designed by me.
These 6 books hold built worlds and crafted characters inspired by individuals’ notion of a better life which was shared in the workshop.
