Learn My Name. participatory installation

The two-channel video installation, “Learn My Name” (2022), was designed for the audience to sit on either side of the installation and watch the opposite side of the video. The audience could see a screen featuring either me teaching how to pronounce my Korean name or American participants struggling to pronounce it. I engaged the audience to experience linguistic power dynamics in a flipped manner. Further, the work resisted the idea of anglicizing the names of people from marginalized racial and ethnic communities.

임의의 미국인 5명에게 내 한국 이름을 가르쳤다. 선생-나의 (정적이고 진지한) 얼굴과 학생-참여자들의 (배우는 것에 어려움을 겪으며 당혹스러워하는) 입이 서로를 마주보는 형태로 설치되었고 관객은 원하는 설치물에 앉아 상대편을 바라볼 수 있다. 관객은 자신이 선택한 누군가와 등 뒤로 전해지는 소리의 진동으로 연결된다.
