In this separating, dissecting, differentiating, polarizing, hierarchizing world, would it be possible to fill the void of us with the tactility of ‘mirae’ (future in Korean)? Can my present be connected to your pain, your skin to their warmth, their ends back to my, to our mirae?
In Latin, Matrix means a ‘womb’ or ‘origin’, and Nova means ‘new.’ Together, Matrix Nova can be read as a new origin or a womb of the future. The exhibition space is imagined as a womb of mirae: the womb that has not yet arrived,* the site where different bodies meet and get rebirthed.
The exhibition features the vibrating sound inspired by heartbeats and childbirth breathing, the fabrics that capture the texture of skin in fluid forms, the IR heat lamps often used in animal farms, the video that constantly sheds and shifts its screens, the writings written in different languages by three authors, and the fabric zines that weave those writings into forms between a pupa and a podaegi (Korean baby wrapper). Moving freely among and touching the installation, the audience is invited into a sensorial and speculative imagination of the womb of the future: the site of co-existence and transformation.
* Mirae 未來 means not only a chronological future but also means the moment that has not yet arrive, with a sense of absence, hope, fear, and/or possibility.
