My American-ish Flag

나의 아메리카-스러운 국기

My American-ish Flag questions the legitimacy of foreigners’ allegiance, residence, and citizenship in the United States. The video presents the artist holding a fabricated Stars and Stripes, roughly drawn onto a Korean flag. The artist moves through her neighborhood, where “real” American flags are raised.

National flags are often symbols of loyalty and pride. Over the past decades, however, the flag has increasingly become a signifier of neo-nationalism and nativism directed against immigrants and foreigners. Amid the flag’s multiple, slippery meanings, I raise my labored and handcrafted American-ish flag—one that ultimately fails to conceal where I come from.

퍼포먼스 영상 및 설치, <나의 아메리카-스런 태극기>는 (국경을 넘어) 이동하는 몸과 국가 정체성에 대한 질문을 던진다. 한국인 여성 (작가 본인)은 미국 거리에서 쉽게 발견되는 성조기 옆에 꼿꼿이 서서 한 정체불명의 국기를 게양한다. 

그 국기는 태극기 위에 어설프고 바지런히 색칠된 성조기이다. 그림은 햇빛에 반사되며 그 뒤에 선명한 태극기를 드러낸다.

이웃의 성조기와 강렬히 대비되는 작가의 “아메리카-스런” 태극기, 작가를 ‘북한'에서 온 여자로 의심하는 미국인은 이동한 몸의 어중간한 위치를 시각적으로 증언한다.
